What is the average weight of road bicycles ? In kgs for steel and alu. Frames ?I am speaking abt the whole bike with tires and every thing ? I want to know avg weights . . . And if 14 kgs is a good buy ? And what category of prices would a 14 kg bike be under
Interesting. I just had this discussion with a customer.
In my shop I have 2 brand new bikes- a GT Series 2 with aluminum frame, carbon fiber fork, and SRAM Apex drivetrain, Mavic Aksium Race wheelset, plus the usual smattering of alloy components. It weighs 10kg, or about 22 pounds.
I also have a Torrent Eclipse with a fully lugged double butted 4130 Chrome Moly (steel) frame and fork, SRAM Apex, a specially built Alex wheelset and familiar alloy parts. Weighs 19 pounds 8 ounces, or about 9kg.
If you were to take the bikes apart and weigh just the frame/forks you would discover that the steel frame actually weighs less than the aluminum one by about 150g, so where do the savings come in? The steel bike has a lighter (no-name) crank, lighter (DiaCompe) brakes, lighter (Kalloy) bar and stem, and wheels that weigh about 1/2 kg less than the GT. Um, let me repeat that to avoid it being thought of as a typo- yes, the fully lugged steel frame weighs less than the aluminum one.
They both cost about $1600. So, which would I take? Well, I am a steel guy, so even if the weights were reversed I'd go with the steel bike, but the difference in rotating mass makes the biggest difference in ride and efficiency.
Lesson: don't just consider overall weight. Look where that weight is at and consider how it affects the performance.
