Will the front Shimano XTR derailleur work with my bike?
The derailleur is called the XTR Mega 9 M960
I have an 8 speed cog with Shimano derailleurs. Currently, I have Alivio front and rear, but I'm upgrading the rear to XTR 960.
What the heck does MEGA 9 mean?-and will it work with an 8spd cog?
Hey,
Absolutely no problem using the M960 on 8 speed drivetrains.
You'll need to check the clamp size on your current derailleur and see if its the same as the XTR though...
For this one, I might go to a shop, because there are the following considerations with front deraillers:
- is the clamp size right?
-top pull or down pull?
- top swing or bottom swing or E-type?
Most deraillers accomodate both top and down pull now, so you don't need to worry about that.
From what I can see from schwinn's website, it looks like they use top swing deraillers... but I'd check at a shop.
Also, you will need to break your chain for the front derailleur.
Lastly, there is not much point getting an XTR front derailler unless you're trying to save grams. it works the same as XT and LX - so I'd save yourself some $$$
good luck
