What chain and what size will I need to shorten it to fit my bike mech , derailuer and cassette ?
I have put a new 8 spd (11-32) SRAM cassette on my MTB and threw away the old chain . I brought a new chain (SRAM powerchain - pc 870) but I dont know if its right because my front three chainrings are Shimano and on the biggest is a sticker saying "Shimno D chain only"
After just buying a SRAM chain I now realise I will have to get A Shimano Chain right ??
My rear Mech/ derailuer Is shimano too and I am told my SRAM cassette will work fine with it is this right?
However I am concerened about putting an incorrect chain on and buying and shortening it to the wrong size
With my SRAM cassete Shimano Front and rear Mech what chain and at what length will I need to shorten it ?
Sorry I made a small mistake in the text above
My largest Chainring doesnt say "Shimano D chain only " It says "Shimano IG chain Only "
The Sram chain will work fine, no worries. Those are older chainrings and it's not an issue with the modern high-end chains like Sram and the Shimano mountain chains. I like Sram and every other chain besides Shimano better because you don't need those damn special pins to remove or repair the chain. I know they say it has advantages, but it's a pain in the rear, adds another part to have and purchase, and they still break.
) Out of a dozen Sram chains on three bikes over the last 4 or 5 years, I've broken exactly one...one time. Shimano can bite me. lol.
To size your chain properly, you route it around the large chainring and the large rear cog, NOT passing it through the derailleur. You'll route it properly after you cut it to the right length. With the chain over your two largest gears, pull it tightly and where the chain ends meet, add one or two links. It's not critical. I cut mine one link for a bit more control on rough ground, and some people even cut them shorter than that, making sure not to ever shift into the big-big combination while riding.
I know it's a lot to sift through and learn, but by the end of doing this yourself with aftermarket parts, you'll be an expert! Sounds like you're doing alright.
