Hit curb in snow at less than 10 mph ('97 Lincoln Towncar) - ABS no longer works and car shakes. Advice please
The roads were very slick with snow yesterday (yay Michigan) and someone was pulling out of a subdivision and couldn't stop. I managed to maneuver around him, but my right rear tire hit the curb at maybe 5-10mph. A piece of the rim broke off and the tire went flat. After cursing out the guy that caused it (who drove off), I put the spare on and drove home. Now, the ABS brake malfunction light is on on the dash, and they don't work. I also feel a slight vibration in the car. This is the first time I have needed to fix my car up and if I could get any advice on what to tell the mechanic to do/check, and how much it might cost, I would appreciate it so much. Merry Christmas and thank you!
Sounds like you may have bent the spindle resulting in either the abs sensor breaking or no longer in line with the teeth on the hub. cost, well, that depends on who you have fix it, maybe a used spindle and hub assembly, etc. My suggestion , find someone you know who works on cars to do it, but you can still take it to a garage to verify the problem and what it will take to fix it. You could be looking at a couple hundred or more at a shop for labor alone and for a 97, it's not worth it. Where in MI do you live, I live in Belding and fix cars too!
