whats the difference between 14 and 21 speed?
yes i know its seven but what are my actual gains by going with a 21 over a 14 speed. i live in a semi hilly area mostly roling hills like wine country(san Luis Obispo, CA) i was wondering if i would use all 21 or if 14 would suufice. i have doen some longer rides on my mountain bike mostly 15-20 miles and one 45 miler reasonably well on a hardtail with road slicks.
im talking about a road bike. i want to shift into road over mountain since where i live is more road and not too many mountain trails
The 21 speed will have a triple chainring up front with a 7 speed cassette, while the 14 will have a double up front. Usually, with the 21 you will have a wider gear range for climbing difficult hills. Your high gears will be about the same as the 14 speed.
Most new road bikes today come with a 9 or 10 speed cassette and either a compact crank up front for 18 or 20 gears or a triple option is often available for 27 or 30 gears.
I have a triple on my road bike but rarely use it, except for the most difficult of hills. Earlier this year, I rode Whiteface Mountain in upstate NY (8-10% grade for 8 miles) and didn't even use it then.
