older mongoose road bike upgrade?
i procured an older, guessing around 2002 mongoose road bike IBOC (only sticker on it?)
its polished aliminium frame/fork.
I took it to local bike shop as it had been sitting in a shed unused for years and didnt shift properly.
I got fitted a shimano 3400 9spd sora shifter set. hg50 13-25 cassette. 4500 tiagra rear deraileur.
along with tyres cables etc.
now it runs great, but i want to upgrade the front crankset and deraileur to match the other new components. it seems the sora shifters will shift a 3 chainring front, this would be great.
Can anyone point me in the right direction of the way to go?
the current parts are old simano 105.
thanks.
First of all we need to clarify what constitutes an upgrade. Those Sora and Tiagra derailleurs you mentioned are at the entry level in Shimano products. Don't misunderstand this, what I mean is that both the Sora and Tiagra components are generally placed on lower priced bikes to help keep the overall cost down. If your Mongoose has Shimano 105 shifters you already have a better quality shifter than either the Sora or the Tiagra. Both the Sora and Tiagra components are perfectly fine products and will serve the average rider well under most circumstances but if you're truly interested in up grading I'd opt to keep the 105 shifters and replace any of the other drive line parts with additional 105 components.
