let x(t) and y(t) be variable quantities related by the equation x^2 + y^2 = 1. this occurs if x and y are the coordinates of a point that moves along the unit circle x^2 + y^2 =1.
in the situation, cal's 6 foot tall brother Hal walks away from the lamp post at 7 feet per second. how long is Hal's shadow when Hal is 10 feet from the lamp post? at what rate is Hal's shadow lengthening at this moment?

Did you mix two different problems here? There is no obvious connection between the first part, describing the unit circle, and the second part, relating shadow length to distance from a light source.
