Black Folding 28

Need help with a take-down rifle - suggestions?

Spending limit: $600 CAD/USD
I'm trying to find a take-down rifle for a friend who canoes and wants to put the a RIFLE in his dry-barrel (28" maximum depth). Folding stocks and 18" barrels are still too long. He wants something with minimum ballistics of a .30-30 Winchester (preference of a .308). Do you have any ideas (maybe something military as I don't know much about them)? He encounters black and grizzly bears on every trip and sometimes multiple times. Thank you.
tahoe guy: I like your idea of a handgun, which would solve everything. The problem is that I'm in Canada and we are not allowed to use a handgun outside a range. Thank you.
My suggestion to my friend was to buy a Mossberg JIC kit and forget trying to find a rifle. It makes sense - cheap, multi-purpose, multi-loads, floating case, etc.

Well, it would blow your budget a little bit unless you could find one used but the Browning BLR lightweight take down would fit your need. It breaks in half with the longest part being about 20". For brown bears, I would still prefer more than a .308 if possible. The BLR you can get in .300 win mag, 7mm rem mag, 450 marlin, 325 wsm, etc. All calibers that will stop just about anything you'll need it to. From there you have your single shot rifles like the H&R handi-rifle that come in a variety of calibers, such as 45-70 which would put a stop to about anything, if you can do it in one shot. They break down and go together very easily.
