Bike Tires 93

Algebra question for everyone?

Solve the problem.

Karin biked at 13 mph for a time but got a flat tire. She then walked at 5 mph. She traveled a total of 93 miles. Had she biked the whole time, she would have gone 117 miles. How many hours did she walk?

Let x = time riding a bike at 13 mph
Let y = time walking at 5 mph

x + y = total time traveling (in hours)

(13 mph)(x) = distance traveled on a bike
(5 mph)(y) = distance traveled on foot

13x + 5y = 93 miles

on bike alone:
13 (x+y) = 117 miles

Subtract equation [2] from equation [1] to eliminate the variable x:
13x + 13y = 117 [1]
13x + 5y = 93 [2]
----------------------------
8y = 24
y = 3

since y is the time she spent walking, she walked for a total of 3 hours.
