how do I replace my wheel bearing hub?
my 97 saturn SW2 has a bad hub! That's what has been causing the rumbling! I wiggled the tire at 12 and 6, and sure enough, about 1/3" of play! So, I need a new wheel bearing hub. Is it difficult to replace? How do I do it? Any directions/pointers?
It depends on whether or not the hub is the front or the rear. I've changed the hub on the rear of mine. It had drum brakes. For me, I removed the wheel, then removed all of the drum brakes and components (springs and so forth). I then unscrewed the hub from the back side (four bolts in a trapezoid pattern). The hub pops right out. I threw the new one in its place, ratcheted it down... then replaced all of the drum brake components. I should have bought some new shoes while I was at it... as it was already worn out. If you forget the sequence of springs to replace on the drum, you can use the opposite wheel as reference (but it's a mirror image).
Replaced the wheel and hub cap.. and that was the end of it. Wheel alignment is usually not necessary with this kind of swap.
I'll see what links I can find for you. I've never replaced the front... so I don't know what to expect with the disc brakes... but I'll see what links I can find for you.
Good luck!

UPDATE:
The front is a pain... but here are some instructions posted by a fellow going by the name of "Twin_Cam":

Go to post #17 for the step by step instructions. Unfortunately his link for photos no longer works.

UPDATE #2:
Here are instructions for rear brake/rotor removal... which you'll need to get to the hub if you happen to have rear disc brakes. After you remove the rotor, you'll have access to the hub/bearing assembly:

UPDATE #3:
Autozone Manual pages for the front (you probably won't want to do the fronts after reading this stuff):

Here are the pages for the rear (quite a bit simpler):

Again, good luck to you.
