When we are unblocked we can have remarkable and diverse adventures
-Julia Cameron
One of the most influential books I’ve ever read my entire life was The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. I’ve realized that too many people nowadays just do not pay enough attention to their passion. Letting their “jobs” and their “responsibilities” be excuses for the way they’re spending their lives. Which is why it’s so important to reclaim our “creativity”. One of the ways I do that is by waking up everyday and doing something called “The Morning Pages”. There are many benefits in doing this activity.
(1) clears your head
Even if you only write, “what am I gonna write?” over and over again, it is still very beneficial. The morning pages act as a way to get everything that’s cluttering your mind out of the way first thing in the morning.
(2) focus your priorities
Whatever you choose to write in your morning pages is your choice. After a while, you notice patterns of what is and what is not working in your life. After that, you can do some examination to see where your priorities should be .
(3) brainstorm ideas
A majority of my favorite lyrics or song ideas have come from morning pages. Usually I’ll list a few thoughts really quickly, look them over after I am done and go “OOOOH SHIIEET SON!”
(4) affirmations and gratitude
I am someone that believes in the power of affirmations and gratitude so I always thank God within the first page and list all the things that are going right in my life. I’ll also write “I AM AWESOME!” a handful of times. Gotta fill the pages somehow!
How To Do “The Morning Pages”
(1) Get A Spiral Notebook
(2) Wake up 15 – 20 minutes earlier then you normally would.
(3) Write for 3 pages. no more. no less.
(4) Throw away paper. make sure no one sees them or they might make fun of you.
What I’ve realized is that after a while, I have given myself more permission to be who I truly am. The voice of the self critic which use to irritate me so much in the past has become a more tolerable companion. Not taking myself as seriously, I’ve been able to generate more ideas and see what is really important in my life.

You’re right I would make fun of you if I saw those pages…
ha! yea trust me there is definitely some “stuff” i would not want anyone to see.
Great post Rocky, think this is an awesome idea that I will definitely try. Taking the time to write without fear of self-censorship and judgment from others is really important, and this is a brilliant way (and time) to do it.
Thanks for the post dude!
@Christopher Jackson:

haha its cool. morning pages have definitely made a big difference for me. hope it does for you too!
This might be something worth doing at night before going to bed especially for people who can’t get to sleep. Maybe if they can get their thoughts out on paper then it could clear their head and allow them to sleep a little better.
hey Paula ! yea definitely ! The Artist’s Way suggests you do it first thing in the morning, but I can see the pages being a great benefit at night too.
Thanks for visiting !
