BROTHER ALI – GOOD LORD

In honor of my favorite rapper Brother Ali coming to town this week, I thought I’d talk about one of his best songs.

“Good Lord” definitely has some of his insightful and inspiring lyrics ever.

I said The Good Lord made me what I am and play this game for keeps/gotta use what I have to get what I want all the dream I got is this dream

And The Good Lord made me what I am and I play the hand I am dealt/sometimes the hardest thing to be in this world is just yourself”

This song is all about being proud of everything that makes you who you are. Reminding us that we have to use our talents to make our lives and the lives of people around us better.

Who would have thought, just giving them the truth from my heart/ both the ugly and the beautiful parts/ would give em food for thought, let em chew it apart

I’ve always come to find out that the more honest I am, the better the world responds to me and the more satisfied I feel. When it comes to creating art, sometimes being brutally honest is the only way to go.

Stephen Covey once said, “what is most personal is most universal.”

In being honest with our art, we can relate to a lot more people.

How you gonna hate me for being what God made me/ It’s not a game and I ain’t saying it playfully

Everyday we have so many disempowering influences telling us we are not enough. Telling us that we will be unable to handle the tough situations. But with each challenging person or situation we face, we turn into a stronger person.

Satan doubted it, Angels bow to it/ I am so beautifully human and I am proud of it

This is my favorite lyric in the entire song. Just the feeling of owning everything about yourself and saying “yes this is me” is an amazing feeling. Granted it is not easy. But everyday that we are thankful and embrace, then we are living to our full potential.
